Stem Cells Help Grow Muscle Following Severe Skiing Injury

Saturday, August 9th, 2014

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine report that some of their severely injured patients grew new muscle tissue with the help of stem cells and a structure that was made from a pig’s bladder that held the stem cells in place while they regenerated and carried out the healing process.

All five patients in Badylak’s study had lost 60 to 90 percent of the affected muscle. Six months after the start of therapy, all have grown some new muscle, and three patients had dramatic improvement. Nicholas Clark was one of the patient’s who benefited.  After a severe skiing accident, Nicholas lost a considerable amount of muscle and had nerve and blood vessel damage in his left calf muscle.  Following the adult stem cell treatment he can now ride his bike again and even jump rope.

Cell Biology Paves Way To Eliminate HIV Virus In Human Cells

Sunday, August 3rd, 2014

As Reported By Stephanie Stahl PHILADELPHIA (CBS)

A scientific first from Philadelphia could pave the way toward curing HIV.

Instead of suppressing and treating HIV and AIDS, which is what currently happens, researchers have for the first time shown they’ve found a way to destroy the virus.

“Basically converting infected cells to un-infected cells and that is very important because the current therapy cannot eliminate the virus from cells,” said Dr. Khalili.

“We have a cure for HIV elimination.  We have a system to eliminate HIV from the cells in the laboratory,” said Dr. Khalili.

“Very exciting, it’s very exciting,” said Dr. Khalili.

Dr. Khalili doesn’t have a time frame on when this discovery could be in clinical trials.  There are so many variables.

Important Statistics

Thirty-three-million people are recorded as having HIV in the world. One million are in the United States. Every year 50,000 Americans contract the virus.
